Kanye West has transitioned to only doing Christian rap but there was a point after he became saved where he considered quitting rap altogether.
‘Ye’s pastor, Adam Tyson, recently sat down with Christian-based media outlet Apologia, for an interview published on Thursday (Oct. 17), where he talked about Kanye’s walk with Christ and his musical stance.’
“[Kanye] started visiting our church back in mid-May,” Tyson, who is the senior pastor at Placerita Bible Church in Newhall, Calif., revealed. After showing up to the service a few times, Kanye asked to speak with Tyson.
“[Kanye] said, ‘About five weeks ago, I got radically saved,’” Tyson continued. “He just started telling me a little about his testimony.”
Kanye revealed to Tyson he turned to Christianity after feeling bogged down by the sins of chasing fame in the music industry and he was on the verge of giving up the rap game.
“One time, he told me that he wasn’t going to rap,” Tyson revealed around the 23:30 mark. “I said, ‘Why not?’ He said, ‘That’s the devil’s music.’ I said, ‘Hey, man. Rap is a genre. You can rap for God.’ I think he was already thinking about it a little bit, but I definitely said, ‘Hey, bro. I think you need to use your talents that God’s given you and use that platform for God.’”
It looks like West took the advice to heart. The rapper has continued his gospel-themed impromptu Sunday Service tour, which most recently made a stop in Jamaica. He also shelved his Yandhi LP in exchange for the Christian hip-hop album Jesus Is King, which is now slated to drop on Oct. 25 along with an accompanying IMAX film.
